The 19 amino acid peptide KGRGKQGGKVRAKAKTRSS was isolated from the epithelial mucosal layer of the injured catfish, Parasilurus asotus. Parasin I showed strong antimicrobial activity, about 12-100 times more potent than magainin II, against a wide spectrum of microorganisms, without any hemolytic activity.Parasin I is a histone H2-derived antimicrobial peptide found in Parasilurus catfish. Parasin I is produced by matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) and cathepsin D.
