Osmolar dimethylsulfonylpropionate(DMSP)of algae is the main precursor of marine dimethyl sulfide(DMS).DMS is a volatile sulfur compound,which affects atmospheric chemistry and global climate.DMSP may play an important role in the microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of the marine surface.The sulfur in DMSP is effectively bound to bacterial proteins(mainly methionine),and DMSP seems to be the main source of sulfur in marine planktonic bacteria.
